This was my first MK concert and it did not disappoint. It has been a month since the gig and I still can't get the Why aye Man tune out of my head! The highlight of the show for me was Song for Sonny Liston. It sounds much better live than on the Shangri-La record. The most disappointing song of the show for me was Telegraph Road. Don't get me wrong, it is one of my favourite DS songs, but in this performance the rest of the band was way too loud and drowned out MK's solo at the end. It wasn't bad, but I had high hopes for this song and in the end the performance was a let down.. The rest of the concert was absolutely great. Watching MK play Sultans of Swing was a joy to behold. Donegan's Gone was awesome. Speedway of Nazereth was really rocking, as was Boom Like That. Another song that deserves its own paragraph is Money for Nothing. The crowd went *wild* during this one and the atmosphere was electric. The Mumbai crowd did not seem to know *any* of MK's solo tracks and were standing still during most of them. However, after the concert many many people have got all his solo albums and are loving them! So that is great. Thats all from me, I wish the band returns to Mumbai on their next world tour! Hi, I hope this gives you guys a good idea of the magic that was tonite. This was the first time we got to see Mark in India. At the end of the concert I (and the better part of a 20,000+ audience) was left ruing that Dire Straits itself never visited this part of the world. The crowds reflecting a mix of generations (but distinctly veering towards DS fans from the 80s) had started gathering from 4:30 onwards but the concert itself kicked off sharp at 7:35 -- the whole band filing onto their respective places before Mark himself strolled on and launched into Why Aye Man. What followed were most of his solo efforts interspersed with Walk of Life, Romeo & Juliet and Sultans of Swing (driving the crowds into a frenzy). However it was quite apparent that a majority of the crowds were not well versed with his latest numbers be it Sailing to..., What it is?, Song for Sonny Liston, Donegan's Gone, Baloney Again or Done with Bonaparte (the version played by Marc was mesmerizing and in view will probably vie for number of the evening). Speedway to Nazareth started off just like on the album but built up gradually blowing the crowd away with the closing instrumental piece. One of the interesting sideshows was Marks constant light banter with the crowd as well as the band which kept the entire atmosphere completely informal and casual. Right in the beginning a spirited soul from the crowd demanded that he wanted his MTV. Mark replied that " You will get it but then we might not do it". To Richard he joked "Its you and me Richard! How about it? As for the rest of you, best of luck" before moving into Done with Bonaparte. The Dire Straits chart BIA toppers were reserved for the 1st encore - starting off with Brothers in Arms, moving on to Money for Nothing, and closing with So Far Away. Was this the end. No, encore number 2 followed with a rendition of Mist Covered Mountains by Guy/Matt -- mark sitting just behind the main piece. Followed by the haunting Local Hero - Going Home theme by Mark accompanied by Guy F and Richard Bennet. Mark and Guy took the final bow and it left a little lump thinking about the last Dire Straits outing with John and Alan. Magic all the way --- all of you guys who have a concert coming your way, dont miss this. In todays age of the quick fix its an education to sit back and let yourself be transported into an age when music was born out of sheer genius and passion, not ad agencies and marketing managers.
