Well I woke up this morning still in utter disbelief that I was given the opportunity to listen to this living legend perform live. I feel blessed because I couldn't afford a ticket and my partner surprised me with this so I am deeply thankful for this incredible evening! I thoroughly enjoyed it and I will never forget it. Its truly magical watching Mark play. He comes up with new things all the time - he's masterful and he brings a freshness to his classics (Sultans of Swing etc.). I think there were standing ovations for Telegraph Road and Sultans of Swing....can't quite remember. It was also so good to see Guy, Richard and the band too. They have so much fun performing you can tell. Guy looks like he probably gets up to hi-jinx all the time and it must be fun touring with him. Danny's great on drums - TONS of energy there. It was also good to hear Richard do a bit of lead guitar here and there.....there's something fun about him too - very cool guy. Mark has a wonderful band. Songs I remember that stood out this evening were 'Speedway at Nazareth' - it just was electric and infused with an exciting chemistry...it blew me away! 'All that Matters' stood out for me.....it's a very tender song and its a gem. Another great performance was 'Sailing to Philadelphia'. At one point I thought that the audience was singing with Mark in the chorus. Its a beautiful track. We were fortunate in that we had some good seats in the arena and during the encore we could go up to the front. When we went to the front of the stage for the encore Mark's voice was quite low in the mix in that area - so I guess the people in the front got a bit of an sound imbalance during the show. I didn't mind though. It was marvellous watching him play especially since he was a little over a metre away! Live performances can never have 100% perfect sound and it must be tricky getting everything right in the overall mix - especially when venues differ so much acoustically .....so I wasn't perturbed if things got a bit loud here or a bit too soft there. This is the beauty of live performances. Its real. Its magic. Does anyone know what the instrumental piece was with Matt on accordion in the encore stage of the show? I think it was before Brothers in Arms. The one thing which I thought of through the show was that the inspiration of this whole thing is that Mark is still writing and playing - and doing it brilliantly too. He is giving. And he is the real thing. He proves that great songs and superb musicianship are what counts. As an artist I look up to this man for his truth and drive. He is an inspiration to so many people. Everyone was so happy last night. :) I missed a lot of his new songs: Shangri-La, Trawlerman's Song (brilliant track!), Everybody Pays (brilliant track!) and Don't Crash the Ambulance. Perhaps they need longer to take root in the river of culture. Thank you for a wonderful evening and good luck with the rest of the tour!
